The 9th SE20 Craft Fair (how have there been 9??) dawned bright and sunny. Hooray! We rolled out the bunting, put signs up on Penge High Street and got down to the important business of showcasing our handmade wares once again.
With 22 stalls billed to appear, we sadly had some very very last minute cancellations, with no time to fill our extra tables. Then: hooray! A crafter and a community group organiser stepped in to save the day and with a bit of shuffling of tables and chairs, we were up to 21 stalls. Phew!
Outside, the sun shone brightly all day. And although we felt the absence of those who had gone to the park on such a springy Saturday, we benefited from a steady stream of people who brought us their smiles, interest, chatter and custom as the fair went on. At some point, someone suggested we put David Bowie on the sound system, and so we did. There was much singing. Sarah, our face painter, painted a beautiful Ziggy Stardust face onto an awesome young lady. The atmosphere remained light until the close of play, with a slow wind down and finally, at 4pm, the bunting came down and it was all over for another few months. I'm always surprised by how fast the day goes by.
There was a real community atmosphere in the hall, which is, of course, the aim of the game.
We'll see you in December for more craft, cake and face-painting. The theme of that fair will simply be 'Community'.
